A wet end to May

Following a fantastically warm/ dry bank holiday weekend (end of May) πŸ˜„πŸ˜„, the much need rain came. From the Tuesday to Thursday we had over an inch of rain (26.7 mm to be precise). This then led again into perfect golfing conditions of sunshine and warmth over the following weekend. The two below enjoyed being out on the course during this wet period!

I had the pleasure of being asked to help out at Walton Heath Golf Club on the bank holiday Monday. They were holding US Open qualifying and some of the big names from the european tour played there on the day but the most interesting part for me was the ground frost on the course when we to start cutting at 4am. I kept telling myself we had the June medal on the Saturday!! The reason we started at 4am was due to the US tour bringing

forward the first tee off times on both courses to 6.40 am. So it took over 40 staff to get both courses set up before. Below is a picture I took while cutting fairways on the new course.

Back to Muswell Hill during the wet period a lot of work was carried out on the ditches and around the trees on the golf course. The ditches were flymoed and strimmed along the bottoms. There are  a couple of reasons why these are done -
•It defines the hazard better
•It is more pleasing on the eye
•It's easier to find a ball
•I get to watch my ball roll in😩
•More importantly it increases the speed the water moves through the ditches and off the course (this is not a problem on the winter as there is little growth).

Above the guys hard at work. Below is a picture after it had been tidied up.

Around the bases of the trees have also been strimmed. All these areas will be sprayed with growth regulators to slow them down in the future.
These jobs are very time consuming but it does make the golf course look better and will be worth it during those summer down pours.

Other works in this short week included all our normal cutting of the course and new edition of new flags and hole cups on the putting green and chipping green.

Let's hope this sunshine is the start of the summer!!!
