Divot Trophy

On Monday the 6th May (bank holiday) we held our yearly Divot trophy tournament. This was later than the original date (Good Friday) because the weather conditions were still very cold and we thought it was best to wait for the temperatures to rise so the seed we put out would germinate quicker.

The day is a golf tournament mixed with course maintenance. The format is a shotgun start, texas scramble. The day starts off with the greenstaff out placing buckets along the middle of the holes before everyone arrives. Then we all meet in the clubhouse for bacon rolls on followed by a quick briefing from myself about the divoting side of things (not how to play golf as my partners could vouch for!) The groups then head out to the hole they will tee off from and divot the fairway for 45 mins prior to the firework going off to start the golf.

The weather was really good and I for one are glad we waited. The amount of members playing on the day was fantastic with over 80 playing and others who just made the effort to come along to divot.
With the field being full we managed to use all the par 3 holes groups to help on the par 5's or longer holes and we even double up on some high wear areas.
On the day, over 250 buckets of divot mix were used. This will make a huge difference to the golf course during the coming months, so lets hope for some showers...

The Texas scramble that followed was just a bit of fun! After the golf we returned to the clubhouse for a sandwich and a drink. The captain then presented the prizes. The winners were Mitch (again, who by the way hit the 2nd green in 1 shot) Ali, Richard and Mick Joyce.

I would like to thank The Captain, Adrian, Maria and bar staff. Also the kitchen staff and greenstaff for all their hard work on the day. Jim Milligan for supplying drinks from his garden to the groups as he was injured. Most of all the members for turning up to help. It would take one of the greenstaff two full weeks to do what took the members together just 45 mins!! An amazing day with a great fun feeling about it 😀
Thank you
